The Friends was formed back in 1986 when the Swindon works finally closed. It is a charitable company with Lady Judy McAlpine and Pete Waterman as Patrons.
The overall aim of the Friends is to support the STEAM Museum in promoting the history and legacy of the Great Western Railway and in particular the railway works at Swindon through a programme of investment, education and promotion.
The Friends help with the costs of purchase, restoration and display of artefacts, carry out fundraising, maintain the Museum’s model railway, and generally promote the Museum through events, activities and publications.
Joining the Friends is easy and brings a number of great benefits. As well as enabling continued financial support for the Museum, as a Member you will get a copy of the quarterly journal North Star, unlimited free admission to the Museum, and discounts in the Museum shop and café.
The Friends are a very friendly and approachable group who have the interests of the STEAM Museum at heart. They would love to have you join them.
