STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway.
At STEAM we pride ourselves in our award-winning customer service and our friendly team are here to welcome your group and ensure your visit is a success.
To get the most from your visit, we recommend you allow between two and three hours.

Join us on a fascinating one hour tour of the Museum, focusing on the highlights of the STEAM collection. Learn about the history of Swindon Works and discover some of the stories of the workers.
Tours are available for a minimum of 15 and maximum of 25 people and need to be booked in advance. For larger groups we can accommodate multiple tours.
All areas of the Museum are fully accessible – most displays are on the ground floor, but ramps and lifts are available to access all other exhibition areas.
We have mobility scooters and wheelchairs available for visitor use. We strongly recommend that these are booked in advance.

STEAM is in a great location. We are located just two minutes’ walk from the acclaimed McArthurGlen Swindon Designer Outlet.
Lydiard Park is a 10 minute drive from STEAM. Visitors can wander through the elegant ground floor apartments of Lydiard House Museum and see ornate plasterwork, original family portraits and furnishings of the St. John family. Lydiard Park is also run by Swindon Borough Council and we can arrange an itinerary that fits visits to both locations into your day.
The historic cities of Oxford and Bath as well as the market towns of Devizes, Marlborough and Cirencester, are a short drive away.
Please contact us if you wish to conduct a familiarisation visit before you bring your group. The group organiser is entitled to one complimentary familiarisation visit, once their booking is confirmed.
